The Internet – Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil?
I overheard a World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCOG) member say the reason they stayed away from the Internet was because “the Internet is the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” I find this to be a very curious understanding. I’m not sure where he learned this from. Was it from his pastor? Was it something he made up? Let’s take a look at where the tree of knowledge of good and evil shows up in the bible:
In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Genesis 2:9
It looks like the tree of knowledge of good and evil is in the Garden of Eden along with the tree of life. Genesis also tells us that Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden for eating from it:
22 And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” 23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side[a] of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life. Genesis 3:22-30
Well, the Bible tells us that the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is in the Garden of Eden.
How can the Internet be the tree of the knowledge of good and evil if that tree existed in the Garden of Eden and Adam and Eve ate from it? Did they eat from the Internet? No, they did not. I’m sorry my friend, but Adam and Eve did not have an Internet connection in the Garden of Eden.
I’m sorry my friend, but if what you say is true, then why does the WMSCOG have fruit on this tree? They have a number of official web sites, YouTube videos, and their followers spend a lot of time posting comments here and on other blogs. For the Internet being a bad place, your church sure is spending a lot of money and time hanging out on it.
Maybe.. just maybe.. someone told you this to keep you away from sites like this one.
I’d be curious where my friend in the WMSCOG came up with this very strange idea? Is this official teaching, or did he come up with this on his own? Does anyone know? I sure don’t, but it’s easily debunked.
