This article is dedicated to all of those who thought Ahn Sahng-Hong was married to Zahng Gil-Jah, only to learn he was really married to Hwang Won-Soon.

The World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCOG) claims that their supposed founder Ahn Sahng Hong was “spiritually married” to a woman named Zahng Gil Jah, whom he revealed as “god the mother”.  Actually, Ahn Sahng Hong founded the New Covenant Passover Church of God (NCPCOG), and was legally married to a woman named Hwang Won-Soon with whom he had four children.

That is why, after Hwang Won Soon’s death in 2008, she was buried next to Ahn Sahng Hong, and his original tombstone was replaced with the one below:

The first picture, which is the front of the tombstone reads:

선지 엘리야 – Prophet Elijah

안상홍- Ahn Sahng Hong

– Wife

황원순-Hwang Won Soon

의 묘– Their grave

So the tombstone reads:

Prophet Elijah Ahn Sahng Hong and his wife Hwang Won Soon’s grave

The right side of the tombstone has the dates of their births and deaths.

The tombstone is located at the cemetery:  경남 양산시 상북면 외석리  산8-1번지 석계공원묘원at lot:  5블럭 42열 12번, 13번에.

The Real Tomb of Jesus

Here is the tomb of Jesus, also known as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which is visited by millions of Christians from around the world every year:

Yet the tomb of Ahn Sahng Hong, is relegated to a common cemetery, an overgrown grave, and is shared with a woman who is not Zahng Gil Jah.

Where are the great pilgrimages to Ahn Sahng Hong’s tomb by followers of the WMSCOG?

If millions of Christians visit the tomb of Jesus every year, why don’t WMSCOG members visit the tomb of Ahn Sahng Hong? Perhaps it is because they (at least those that read Korean) would see that “the Prophet Elijah” is written on it and not “the Christ”.  Or perhaps it is because they would see that he is buried beside his real wife, Hwang Won Soon. Whatever the reason, I find it hard to believe that a man who:

is the Second Coming of Jesus and was “spiritually married” to another woman other than his legal wife.   Put aside for a moment that Ahn Sang Hong’s end of the world predictions didn’t come true and were removed from his writings, that he said the idea of a “mother god” was delusional, that he completely refutes the same verses that the WMSCOG uses to say that Zahng Gil Jah is “god the mother” and concludes that there is no mother god… At some point you have to stop and ask yourself “how much longer can I ignore what is plain to see”?  The WMSCOG’s teachings are part of an ever-evolving story that have been invented to fit a set of facts and that whenever another fact emerges, the story must become ever more convoluted in order to fit the new “truth”.

The World Mission Society Church of God believes that their founder Ahn Sahng Hong, was the second coming of Jesus Christ.  Unfortunately for their claim, Ahn Sahng Hong only believed he was the Prophet Elijah.  That’s what he claimed in his writings and that’s what he put on his tombstone.

This is Ahn Sahng Hong’s grave site in Gyeongsang, South Korea.
The Korean letters on the tombstone are “선지 엘리야 안상홍 지 묘” which reads:

선지(prophet)  엘리야(Elijah) 안상홍(Ahn Sang Hong) 지(of or ‘s) 묘(grave)

Just to be sure, on the back of the tombstone it reads he lived Dec 1, 1918 – Feb 24, 1985, and it also lists his children’s names, which is curious since the WMSCOG denies he was ever married to anyone other than Zahng Gil Jah.  Just for the record, there are other folks buried in this same cemetery who claimed they were God. You can see more pictures and read more about them in this excellent article.

Ahn Sahng Hong’s Writings Claim He Was the Prophet Elijah, Not Jesus

In Ahn Sahng Hong’s book entitled, “The Mystery Of God And The Spring Of The Water Of Life” he implies that he is the prophet Elijah.  Ahn Sahng Hong writes in the preface:

This book is about the last secrets of God, which have been hidden only for the last remnant, as it is written in Malachi 4:5-6–the last chapter of the Old Testament: ‘See I will send you the prophet Elijah’…As it was at the time of John the Baptist and Jesus’ first coming, so will it be in the last days.

Ahn Sahng Hong

I guess that makes sense since his tombstone says the same thing.

Elijah and Christ Are Not the Same Person

In the Bible, Christ is not considered to be Elijah.  Jesus tells use this quite clearly in Luke Chapter 9.

Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.” Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.

Luke 9:18-21

Therefore, if Ahn Sahng Hong considered himself a prophet of any kind, then he can not be Christ as the WMSCOG claims.

Who Does the WMSCOG Consider to be Elijah?

When I was a member of the WMSCOG, I asked why Ahn Sahng Hong never claimed to be Jesus in his writings.  I was told that Ahn Sahng Hong came as Jesus “in secret”, and he revealed to his disciples that he was Jesus prior to his death.  Turns out he actually claimed to be the Prophet Elijah, and not Jesus.

When I was a member, a deaconess told me that “mother says that general pastor [Joo Cheol Kim] is the spiritual prophet Elijah”.  There is an obvious discrepancy here.  Why did Ahn Sahng Hong consider himself to be Elijah, and yet according to the WMSCOG deaconess, Joo Cheol Kim is Elijah?  How many times is Elijah prophesied to appear?

Was Elijah Prophesied to Appear a Third Time?

Elijah was a prophet that challenged Baal, the Canaanite god responsible for rain, thunder, lightning, and dew (1Kings 18 & 19).  Elijah’s return is prophesied in the book of Malachi.

See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes.

Malachi 4:5

This prophecy finds it’s fulfillment in the New Testament when Jesus says:

For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. Whoever has ears, let them hear.

Matthew 11:13-15

and again in the book of Matthew we read:

Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.

Matthew 17:11-13

The prophecy of Elijah’s return was already fulfilled by John the Baptist when Jesus Christ was alive.  There is no Biblical reference to support the notion that Elijah would return a third time.

Conclusion

The World Mission Society Church of God claims that Ahn Sahng Hong was the second coming of Jesus Christ, but according to his grave, Ahn Sahng Hong only ever claimed he was the Prophet Elijah.  It is understandable that current WMSCOG members will initially react defensively to the facts presented here since they believe that Ahn Sahng Hong was the second coming of Jesus, but the pictures and his writings speak for themselves.

Ahn Sahng Hong died on February 25, 1985.  The World Mission Society Church of God claims that Ahn Sahng Hong was Jesus Christ, but what does Romans 6:9 say about that?

For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.

Romans 6:9
Ahn Sahng Hong’s funeral.

Romans 6:9 says Christ “cannot die again“, but Ahn Sahng Hong died. (Note that Zahng Gil Jah, who the WMSCOG claims was Ahn Sahng Hong’s “spiritual wife” is not in the above photo). There you have it, evidence that Ahn Sahng Hong was not Jesus Christ.
