I have heard members of the World Mission Society Church Of God claim that Revelation 2:17 speaks of a “new name” for Jesus Christ.  Let’s take a closer look at exactly what Revelation says:

Who Has a New Name?

I think the question comes down to who has a new name in Revelation 2:17?  Let’s take a look at the verse in context:

Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality. Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.
Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.

Revelation 2:14-17

So the new name easily applies to those who have gone off after false prophets (Balaam and the teachings of the Nicolaitans).   When those people repent, they will once again return to Christ, receiving His name which is new to them.

In general, the “new name” refers to the name of “Christian” which is still new for many today.  The fact that it is “known only to the one who receives it”, points to the intimate nature of our relationship with Christ.

Paul Says it is Jesus Christ

Acts 4:12 supports this when it speaks of the name of Jesus Christ, saying:

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.

Acts 4:12

If there is “no other name” than Jesus Christ, then there is “no other name”.  So Scripture says one thing, and my friends in the WMSCOG say something contrary.

Ahn Sahng Hong Says it is Jesus Christ

Interestingly, the founder of the WMSCOG, Ahn Sahng Hong himself says the name is Jesus Christ. How confusing then, for WMSCOG members to say that the “new name” is “Ahn Sahng Hong” when Ahn Sahng Hong himself says salvation is found in no other name than Jesus Christ?

salvation is found in no other name than Jesus, not only at His first coming but even in the last days

Ahn Sahng Hong The Mystery of God and the Spring of the Water of Life, page 181

I’d say that’s pretty conclusive that somewhere along the line, members of the WMSCOG no longer make sense, and contradict themselves.  (By the way, if you’d like to see pictures of the book with the quote, you can check out this great article which points out the same problem).

In Conclusion

The “new name” of Revelation is the new name of Christian, for all of those that are now in Christ. Paul affirms this in Acts 4:12.  Just another contradiction of the WMSCOG, publicly available for anyone with an Internet connection.
