There are teachings in the WMS that focus heavily on the council of Nicea and some of the things that might of might not have happened. I've just read about the Book of Thomas which is one of the books that the council decided not to cannonize into the New Testament. One part of this book suggest that Jesus strived to make women into males and that all women should strive to be like males. God doesn't make mistakes and I certainly don't see women as being something that God wants to change. No other part of the Bible supports this kind of idea. I appreciate the council of Nicea for seeing things like this as not being of God and choosing not to include this. Any thought on this?

SimonParticipantThe Cannon is unrelated to I Nicean Council. Though there may very well be good from Nicea

Love'n HoneyParticipantThat’s crazy.. But why would Thomas write that of God told him to?
December 18, 2012 at 6:49 PM #49927
JoshuaParticipantRenita, that's really the point. After being held up to the Word of God the Book of Thomas did not hold true and therfore was not included. It seems that Thomas had his own opinions of what he felt was appropriate infused in his writings. It really should not be that surprising when you think about the fact that Thomas was told that Jesus would come back to life and his own thought processes wouldn't allow him to believe it. I have found out about a group called the "Jesus Seminar" that believe that the Book of Thomas should be included in the Bible. They also are of the mindset that Jesus didn't say most of the things that he is credited for in the Bible. Unfortunately this group has been given time in the media and their oppinions have caused some people to stumble. They claim to be scholars and claim that their research is "The Truth". Sound familiar? Like I have said in the past the WMS is not the only group that claims to have the truth. These so called scholars claim to want to bring people to the "Real Jesus". A Jesus that is relevant for today. They also claim to be bringing the Bible back to its true state by saving us from the fundamentalist. Does this sound crazy to anyone else? If the inclusion of things like the Book of Thomas and poor unfounded research brings us to a supposed true form of Jesus that has been hidden from all of us all of these years (hidden truth) I don't think I want to be involved. There is way too much valid research that disputes this group to say that their claim to "The Truth" is factual. The Jesus Seminar sounds like another run of the mill cult to me but just like the WMS the media has given them time to create problems.

SimonParticipantThomas and Mary etc are also suspected to be pseudographical.

JoshuaParticipantA more reasonable assessment of why Thomas was not included is that it was written in the second century as opposed to the other gospels which were written in the first. This created a situation where the book of Thomas had become tainted with the feelings and desires of the times. No other gospels concure with the Book of Thomas. Most Biblical scholars don't find the Book of Thomas credible. I'm not trying to hurt anyones feelings here but this is the way it is and some of the reasons for it.

emilParticipantJoshua is right. Many books were left out not only because of incongruent content but also because of doubtful veracity. The latter more so because their actual authorship dated so much later than the lifetime of their supposed author.
Secondly, to the best of my knowledge the canon was compiled in the last decade of the 4th century in the councils of Hippo and Trent. 393 AD and 397 AD I believe.

Love'n HoneyParticipantSo, Thomas want a true apostle? Like judas?
December 19, 2012 at 6:16 PM #49932
JoshuaParticipantThe Book of Thomas is not a true representation of the teachins of person of Jesus Christ.
December 19, 2012 at 6:16 PM #49933
Love'n HoneyParticipantwasn’t

JoshuaParticipantIsn't.
December 19, 2012 at 6:31 PM #49935
Love'n HoneyParticipantSo, Matthew, mark, Luke, John, peter, Timothy.. Were the only ones? Then why do we say “the 12” if it’s not really twelve?
December 19, 2012 at 6:32 PM #49936
SimonParticipantThe Book of Thomas wasn't written by Thomas, the issue isn't Thomas the apostle at all

Love'n HoneyParticipantOh my goodness…. So who were the apostles??
December 19, 2012 at 6:56 PM #49939
SimonParticipantMatthew 10:2-4, “These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.”

Love'n HoneyParticipanti have a question that the wmscog answers in a round about way.. why did god choose those people to be apostles if they weren’t going to do gods will?

Well, why did God choose Israel as His 'chosen nation' if they weren't going to do His will either? I believe He knows these things, but chooses these people anyway to show His character through their lives. (And most of the apostles did do His will, at least most of the time.)

Love'n HoneyParticipantWhat are we supposed to learn from judas and Thomas?
December 19, 2012 at 7:19 PM #49943
SimonParticipantJudas was chosen to be betrayed by him and Thomas did Jesus's will as much as any apostle.
