And I'm not talking about security cameras or I would have necro-bumped another thread.
A definition:
Surveillance connects two related phenomena:
- the collation of information used to co-ordinate social activities of subordinates.
- the direct supervision of the conduct of those subordinates.
"Surveillance" by its very nature, involves disclosure – ie, making visible.
Gathering information discloses patterns of behavior and activity for superiors.
The mitigation of the manipulation of conditions of which abuse may occur should be primarily in the best interest of those subject to that surveillance.
The "system" can be assuring, but research shows that when people recognize that the surveillance of everyone takes away all individuality and begins to feel more like spying. Perhaps there are stories to be shared in this regard?
