Is it possible that they haven't got tax exemption there?  Canada's tax system is different.  Or maybe it's tougher to be registered as a charity there.  Anyone?

Maybe you don't have to register as a charity, but I'm sure you have to register for tax exemption.  Interesting too as I believe they use gross wages as a determinant for tithing for their members.

Simon, I respectfully disagree with you there.  If they didn't register, then how do they get the exemption?  They applied for tax exempt status, for sure.  And on the application, there are some real eye-openers as to how they say they were founded, etc.  It's very interesting.

If they are not a registered charity, then who are the members making donations to? It seems by the Canadian link above that in order to be tax exempt, then the entity has to be a registered charity.

Simon, I was talking about tax exemption in the U.S.  You most definitely have to apply for tax exemption here.  And believe me, I wouldn't want to disagree with the IRS, they can be difficult!  Joking again!

I can only find regulations for Ontario…

As far as US the IRS says churches don't need to in the link I provided:

    Automatic Exemption for Churches

Churches that meet the requirements of IRC section 501(c)(3) are automatically considered tax exempt and are not required to apply for and obtain recognition of tax-exempt status from the IRS .

Although there is no requirement to do so, many churches seek recognition of tax-exempt status from the IRS because such recognition assures church leaders, members, and contributors that the church is recog- nized as exempt and qualifies for related tax benefits . For example, contributors to a church that has been recognized as tax exempt would know that their contri- butions generally are tax-deductible

I think they should have to but that's wholly another issue… and certainly the distinctions between how they filled out the paper work and how they act and all is cause for questions but that's another issue.

But IRS regulations either way are not relevent to Canadian Law…

I know in Ontario you need to prove registration and stuff but I don't know if that is the country as a whole.

Maybe Churches don't need to apply for tax exempt status, but if they want the benefits and extra money it would save, they have to. And if their members want to be able to take donations off on taxes the church has to have exempt status.  And I have seen the documents where wmscog did apply.

Not saying you don't know anything, or are trying to mislead anyone.  It is just my understanding after researching and looking at waht they do for four years now.  I am very interested in how they play the financial end of it, so I have paid a lot of attention there.

And I wondered why they were worrying about their status when the world was supposed to end in 2012.  (Saw the application in 2010.)
