WMSCOG says the “New Name” in Rev.2:17 is Ahnsahnhong but Revelation says this New Name will be given to those who “Overcome”.

“To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.”

I guess that means a person will receive this new name when he overcomes the evils of this world and stays faithful till the end. How come then wmscog gives this “New Name” in the beginning of the person’s faith in wmscog (during the baptism ceremony).

It seems obvious to someone who reads Gods word truly seeking the truth. The white stone is given to believers who accept Jesus and turn away from their sins. There’s another place in the Bible that talks about stones. They are used to pass judgment or as a vote. A black stone represents a negative or guilty vote while a white stone represents a affirming or not guilty vote. Personally, l think the name on the stone which is given to those that overcome is Christian. Jesus gives us affirmation and a vote of not guilty because of his blood and our willingness to accept the free gift of salvation. Only those that overcome their sin nature and receive Jesus will know that they’re Christians. I hope this helps. A friend in Christ Jesus.

There are a few other thoughts on this but not one that has anything to do with the name being ASH.

    1. There are quite a number of people in the OT who were given a new name by God. The new name is always indicative of something they achieved or were called to achieve. Examples are Abram changing to Abraham, Jacob changing to Israel, etc. When John writes to the church at Pergamum, where a member, Antipas, had been killed as a martyr, John was trying to encourage other members to stay firm in their faith despite the persecution. That is why he wrote about giving them a new name when they emerged victorious through the period of persecution.

    2. There is also another view on the white stone. In the ancient olympics, winners did not receive medals. When these victorious heroes returned home after the olympics, their home town used to celebrate their victory. Writing their names on a white stone used to be a popular way of giving them fame and recognition.
