my encounter with the WMSCOG
Thought I'd tell the story of my bizarre encounter with the WMSCOG a few years ago. It's nothing new, pretty typical, just thought I'd add to the history.
I was in the middle of my final exams and I was sitting in the university trying to finish an assignment when suddenly these two Korean women showed up.
Creepily, they sat down on either side of me. One of them had a notebook, the other one had a Bible. Oh shit, I thought, here we go. Now, I'm not a christian, but I do respect and have an interest in religion. I also happened to have a bible in my pocket that someone had handed to me on the street, one of those plastic Gideons one.
Before they had a chance to say "Do you love jesus?" I whipped out the Bible that I had in my pocket. With the hope that this would be enough to satisfy them that I didn't need a conversion, I added that I was too busy right now and could they talk to me later.
They called my bluff. Now I had no excuse not to hear their continued rubbish. One of the girls then took me through various verses in the Bible pointing out her church's view of god and all that. All this nonsense about the heavenly mother, you know it.
I just kept nodding and smiling, and finally, one of them grabs my mobile phone and says "We need to meet you about coming to our church, what is your number", and starts going through my contacts. Bewildered, I grabbed my phone back from them and one of them kept poking me and asking for my phone number. It was extremely bizarre behaviour, like they had no social skills whatsoever. The kind of people who you might encounter in a psychiatric hospital.
Long story short, they used various trickery including calling their own phones to my number, and I got my phone back. Though I was astonished, I was still trying to be polite to these maniacs and needed to just get rid of them. Remember, this was during my exams. I didn't want to start any trouble, but they wouldn't take no for an answer.
They asked me when I could meet them, I just made something up. Obviously I didn't feel bad for lying, because these people were harassing me.. They walked away, and said "Do NOT disappoint us". Whatever. I figured they would leave me alone once I stood them up.
But here's the thing. I didn't even need to stand them up, because an hour later, they started calling me and calling me. I never answered. Frustrated, I looked up the WMSCOG, and found out they were a cult, I contacted some former member who had the only anti-WMSCOG site at the time who gave me some advice. Later I heard that he was the subject of an online harassment campaign.
I would see them in college, and they would stare at me. Day after day, they would find me and talk to me and try various psychological tactics. I never felt they were getting through, but I learned a lot about how they try to brainwash people. As soon as they thought I was showing any weakness they would try and exploit it. I got more and more angry at them. I am naturally a very patient person and I have never even raised my voice as an adult, so I remained polite while privately thinking of ways to end this.
The thing is, the stuff they were saying made no sense in the context of the country where this was happening (an English speaking country in Europe) and they looked like fools. So even though they were extremely annoying, it was very hard to take them seriously, because they clearly had no idea what they were doing. I feel like they were just sent on a plane to my country with a bag full of books and told to just wander around, but there's no way it could have worked – one of them barely spoke any English so her brainwashing efforts were particularly strained.
It was rather like being followed by a dog or a cat who wanted to play with you, but would scratch you and bark at you.
They didn't seem to understand that I didn't want to meet them and that I was in the middle of exams. Every time I told them to go away, they would 'forget' that I had told them. I resolved to tell them to go away once and for all, and get the whole thing on video and have some witnesses.
So one day in the campus, when they made their usual approach, I got a friend to record me telling them to leave me alone. It took a couple of minutes to get them to understand the word no. Imagine the most insane breakup you could have with the clingiest person you can imagine.
They tried a few last ditch attempts, but everybody was laughing at them, and I felt quite relieved, because their attempts at emotional manipulation had finally come to nothing.
Anyway they absolutely flipped and demanded that I delete the video. Honestly, it was hilarious watching them freak out. They were obviously worried that someone in the mothership would be upset.
I refused to be harassed, and later uploaded the video to YouTube and showed it to some friends on a website I ran. I informed the campus police that a cult was recruiting people on the campus, and they were run out of the university.
For a couple of years though, they would randomly show up on my websites making various unbelievable accusations, really off the wall stuff. I had to make the youtube video private because the nutters kept showing up and leaving deranged comments.
After I made it private I kept receiving messages that were obviously from church members, pretending to be investigating the church, looking for access to the video. It would have been impossible to fall for these tricks because they were incredibly stupid – (e.g. they would use the same account to post testimonials).
Usually, these morons would post some Korean court ruling that apparently proved they weren't an illegal organisation. I honestly feel bad for them, they are still making fools of themselves. There are so many apologists for them on the internet now, but they are so transparent and amateurish, they are like an amusing parody of themsleves.
Hope you all have a nice weekend
