Ricki Lake had a show today titled “I survived a cult”. Cult expert Rick Ross gave many characteristics of a cult. One characteristic is the cult is personality driven. Example: David Koresh. I say god the mother fits that one. Another is isolation from loved ones. Also indoctrination. Rick Ross said if your loved one is in a cult don’t blurt it out to them.
Good timing that she had the topic on today. Perhaps the episode can be watched soon as the airing date was today.

SimonParticipantfrom what I can see rick ross is more a guru than a reliable person and.ricki lake is a bit sensationalist.

DisturbedParticipantEveryone is entitled to their own opinion. At the end of the day there were some valid points made. I also believe everyone could use the opportunity to educate themselves, especially those who have loved ones still “inside”.

SimonParticipantIm sure good points were made as
Accept the truth from whatever source it comes
even ricki lake even zgj

Sarah2013ParticipantThat's good. The only problem with these experts is the absense of educating outside of scripture. However, the idea of it all is great.

Love'n HoneyParticipantI didn't know Ricki Lake still had a show… I definitely agree that you should blurt it out to your loved ones. My mom did that and it pissed me off! She hasn't even apologized for it. That woman is a real piece of work….. Anywho, what station does it come on?
April 13, 2013 at 1:36 AM #57506
DisturbedParticipantThey didn’t discuss scripture at all because as we have seen people have different interpretations & opinions about the bible. The main point I wanted to bring up was how to identify cults. They spoke of all kinds of groups-not only religious groups.
When I joined wmscog a friend blurted out to me that I was joining a cult. In my own thinking, this church did not fit my idea of what I thought a cult was. I had been studying about 1 month & keeping services. I knew the church was worldwide and not a small group of people. Nothing about it screamed a cult or destructive group. Looking back, I wish I hadn’t used my own idea of a cult to make the decision to ignore my friend. I know that none of the members think they’re in a cult. They know people label the church a cult. As a society we need to reexamine what is considered a cult.

DisturbedParticipant@Renita…Ricki Lake has a new talk show-a grown up version of her former show. It comes on Fox.
I agree it shouldn’t be blurted out that their church/group is a cult. COG has programmed the members to take offense when family members or friends tell us we belong to a cult. As a former member wanting to get my friends out, I want to learn how to convince my friends why they should leave and later explain the church’s cultish characteristics.

SimonParticipantinstead of worrying about labels addressing the issues themselves
April 13, 2013 at 2:13 AM #57509
DisturbedParticipant@Simon…I’m going to take one for the team right now & say I have a bug up my butt. My post and the points I have made are valid. If I hadn’t had such a limited view about cults I can say I may have looked into the group more before continuing on. While I agree the problem should be fixed, what about in the meantime?! They are continuing to recruit more people. Which is why people need to know the characteristics of a cult! You don’t have to agree. You are entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to mine.
April 13, 2013 at 2:21 AM #57510
Love'n HoneyParticipantThe labels are there because the issues have been addressed.. Without knowing the issues, how can someone label an organization as anything?
April 13, 2013 at 8:47 AM #57511
SimonParticipantThe fact is labels mean what you want them to mean but if you address the issues themselves they can’t equivocate even on pretense
April 13, 2013 at 8:54 AM #57512
SimonParticipantAnother issue is they may start the lds all religions are cults argument
They already spun brain washing to a trigger word
April 13, 2013 at 12:44 PM #57513
Love'n HoneyParticipantStop using labels Shimon.
April 15, 2013 at 5:02 AM #57514
emilParticipantI agree with Simon here. Calling it a cult is a label, even if it may be accurate. One could take the characteristics listed by the experts and apply them to most religions and show instances where they match. The guys on the inside will never realize they are in a cult.
The thing that really stands out for the wmscog is the false teaching and dcotrines. That in itself is damaging to the soul without emphasizing the cult angle.
In short, I would say that the cult point works well when the discussion is purely secular. When it comes to a Christian discussion, we must focus on the doctrine and how scripture is twisted. there is a time and place for either approach.
April 15, 2013 at 5:27 AM #57515
Sarah2013ParticipantI have a question, Emil. What would you say " The Peoples Temple – Jim Jones was? A cult or mere misconception of scripture/doctrine/false teaching ? Oh… Just incase, here is a little info on The Peoples Temple. www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7IxGGfpSWk
Bear in mind that Jim Jones went from being pastor to being seen as Jesus/deity to his believing members. At some point his memebers would say they believe in Jim Jones.
April 15, 2013 at 7:32 AM #57516
SimonParticipantEvery religion ever is a cult
April 15, 2013 at 7:33 AM #57517
emilParticipantI have no doubt it was a cult.
The point I was making was not whether or not the wmscog is a cult, but the approach we need to take while debating with members. Harping on the cult angle is not going to help guide members out. They are blinded to it.

I disagree.
Wiki: The word cult in current popular usage is a pejorative term for a new religious movement or other group whose beliefs or practices are considered abnormal or bizarre by the largersociety.[1] Wiki. A relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.
So how is every religion ever a cult?
April 15, 2013 at 7:47 AM #57519
DisturbedParticipant@Emil…thank you for getting my point of starting this thread. I don’t want to debate scriptures, labels, etc…I want us to get educated! When I started studying with the church I was taught about the basics….Sabbath, Passover, being an angel from heaven and lastly 2cc. I learned & understood about mother well after baptism. This church didn’t fit my preconceived idea of a cult.
Now it’s 2013 and the dynamics of the world have changed from the Jim Jones days. We need to be educated to prevent our loved ones & friends from being sucked into this group the way we were. Everything seems so nice when you are a guest or new member. You’re being courted almost. Once you’re in the brainwashing is in full swing. I just want to keep new people from being taken advantage of…save them from the pain I am currently going through. Knowledge is power!
April 15, 2013 at 7:48 AM #57520
SimonParticipantYour only using one definition
Also I might point out the biggest most important belief in christianity IS considered bizarre by the larger community
