Uh-oh. End times are upon us. All other churches are doing it wrong. Follow the Bible for salvation!

MountainMomParticipantIt's really something that there are so many cults and false prophets out there, and there is so little awareness. I really think we (in the educational system) need to offer some kind of information on this because our kids are going out to the prime recruiting grounds for these things without any awareness at all. They are so trusting and naive, and think they would never get sucked into something like this. But it can happen to anyone, anytime. There isn't any immunity besides being informed about religious fraud. We are falling short on that in our society.

Love'n HoneyParticipantI think when we teach our children about stranger danger we need to be more specific and also encourage personal research. The kind that includes the Pros and Cons of any organization and not just trust them because they worship a god. And I honestly mean any organization. A group of people don't have to be religious to be a cult, more importantly a destructive cult.
We can teach our youth about specific organizations (Heaven's Gate, WMSCOG, the military) but what about when they run into a new cult? If we teach the red flags (love bombing, it's not safe outside the group, we're your real family, repitition, etc.) we can nip it at the bud.
I just got done having a conversation with my coworkers (we all have children) about this subject. I asked: how do you guys plan to teach your kids about destructive cults and how to avoid them? Turns out, they don't know much about cults to be teachings their children anything. They both had the idea that cults are strictly religious, which is not true. And they don't know how to recognize destructive cults. How can we reach the adult population as well?

QuestioninginlaParticipantGood luck with that.
Leaders of all sorts like their followers to be ignorant.
or maybe I'm just being negative today. not sure.
here's a litmus test:
You think union leadership want their membership learning about information control and us-vs-them? and they aren't really cults, but have a few too many items on the checklist, imho. Hey, union guy. I'm the union leader and I make $250 or 500k, and this is a good thing. I have a bridge to sell you.
and they're ahead of the game because Fox News is the bad guy.
works like a dang charm.

Love'n HoneyParticipantEven if I don't reach all the people in this world I hope to at least reach my daughter. I fear that I'm equiping her with too much knowledge (not all at once of course). I'm afraid that she'll learn too much and will become too overwhelmed or won't be able to function in society because she sees how horrendous it is. Much like people who find out the ingredients to certain foods and decide to never eat them again.

MountainMomParticipantLol! And I just love hot dogs anyway! Well, we can tell them stories about what has happened, give them the tools to identify cult characteristics (religious or otherwise) and let them know they have to use their critical thinking skills. Since they usually recuit at colleges or other places where our kids are away from us, I think we have a lot of time if our kids are still at home.
But I still think we should have some kind of information at the high school level. When I described what was happening with the wmscog,a kid who had gone to a Bible camp as a sophomore in high school told me that it sounded like a cult.

Too HungryParticipantOK this is the right site! Someone help me please! I have a very close friend and she has been literally sucked into this church. What do I do? I haven't heard from her in a couple of weeks! Please any information. Thank you!

Have to disagree they brainwash and manipulate as bad as WMSCOG

You won't see me defending the (destructive) actions of unions. Here's a key phrase: I'm willing to listen to your thoughts on the matter, Simon (which is really just rhetorical; its all about whether or not one really can objectively listen to alternative points of view, am I right?).
*thinks to self, union members and wmscog members will surely say to themselves 'I listen to alternative POVs'* L-O-L

MountainMomParticipantI think unions would be more effective if they used the fasting and sleep deprivation techniques the wms uses, don't you? Maybe throw in some phobias on top? There's an alternative POV for ya! Lol!

SimonParticipantthey use different methods that are more subtle
