While doing research to determine what bible verses to utilize to begin planting seeds of doubt, I have deteremined there are many versions. I believe the WMSCOG utizes the New World Version. I am having trouble with the way this version is written. What is a good version to utilize?

Sarah2013ParticipantI use NASB but feel King James is the best.

gennyParticipantThe New World Version is what the Jehovah's Witnesses use.
I've seen the wmscog use the NIV.

Love'n HoneyParticipantThe Zions I went to only sold NIVs.
April 14, 2013 at 11:22 PM #58061
gennyParticipantThere are many good versions out there. I like NIV or New King James or NASB.

AnonymousInactiveNIV is what I meant. Sorry. ๐ What is NASB?

DisturbedParticipantNIV is the version that is widely used but they use other versions to try to more clearly state certain verses to make their point. Just for one verse in a sermon they might use KJV or NASB.

TruthParticipantI agree with Disturbed it is the NIV
April 15, 2013 at 1:51 AM #58067
Sarah2013ParticipantYes, NIV is what Wmscog preferred when I was there. Like Genny, I go back and forth with NASB and King James. There is a difference, however, between King James and New King James. I like the King James because of the old English and cross check when I need to with my NASB.

SimonParticipantKing james is fairly awful imo but the only ones I downright refuse to accept are the message and amplified

I don't feel the same way about KJ, I really do like it.

SimonParticipantIt has some translations that are so far off that they must be intended
April 15, 2013 at 7:45 AM #58071
Sarah2013ParticipantI've been a Christian for thirty something years now and still find no problem with it. Then again, I love shakespeare. Maybe I'm just plain weird.
April 15, 2013 at 7:59 AM #58072
SimonParticipantI love shakespeare and old english as much as anyone incorrect translation is another issue

Love'n HoneyParticipantI heard someone say the verse about a camel is completely translated wrong. Matt 19:24
April 15, 2013 at 7:35 PM #58074
gennyParticipantI don't see any problems with Matt. 19:24 comparing it to an interlinear Bible.
With KJV you have to understand that they were using English words with their 16th century meanings. The same words have different meanings now, like the King James using charity instead of love. And more ancient manuscripts have been found, and more scholarship in the original language, so the translation has been more fine-tuned, so to speak. But the overall message is still the same.
April 15, 2013 at 7:46 PM #58075
Love'n HoneyParticipantYes, when reading about something or from something that is of a different era, we must read it with the mindset of those people or the writer of that era otherwise things probably won't make sense.
