Am I the only one who finds the comparisons in the book 1984 and the wms? The “We love you” (which creeps me out and is so fake to me) is equivalent to Oceana’s 2 minutes of hate (except they do it with love towards each other and mother, vs. an enemy); the slogan in 1984 “War is peace / freedom is slavery [and] ignorance is strength”; the wms chanted something not along thise lines but it was like a slogan, I don’t remember what it was specifically. But yes, I had noted the similarities from the start, and to rhink my family member ALSO read this book… Thought police 24/7 and children going against their own parents in the name of big brother… Sound familiar?

I agree. A member and I had a discussion and the book was bought up in conversation. I made a reference and it was explained to me that classic works of literature were not recommended for us to read.

I found it strange that such a classic was not respected but other pop culture movies/music/books were often revered. Such as the Matrix (church leaders favorite movie to reference and K-pop music was “ok” because it came from Korea.)

@Set, they told you that? Wow. Thats bad. My initial Overseer had this huge hatred for technology and Cell phones. He didn’t want members taking calls between services.

@untouchable. Yup that was told to me by sisters and a leader. New song was also the only music we should listen to. I did see a recent performance though that we had to watch and bros and sis from a local zion did a performance to a korean dance song and nsync lol

@Set I remember the Members doing cheesy, “Glee-like” performances, to. There was an NSync remake last Xmas. I’ve learned alot of the ideas are recycled.

Hi. I’m an ex JW who was just introduced to this church today from two people knocking on my door. When I started to leave the Jehovah’s Witnesses it was a long drawn out process. I started a blog at one point in my exit journey and one of the articles was detailing similarities between “1984” and the Jehovah’s Witnesses (also known as the Watchtower Society). Maybe you’ll find it interesting.
