How Many Times Will Jesus Come to Earth?

We have already seen the important of prophecy in our first lesson. Reason tells us that if God were to send a messenger, with an all-important message for all of humanity, that the least He could do is pre-announce his coming.  Otherwise, there would be nothing to prevent any impostor from appearing in history and saying “I come from God,” or “an Angel appeared to me in the desert and gave me this message”.  In these cases, we would have no way of testing the messenger, other than taking him at his word, and he could be wrong.

We know that since Jesus was prophesied, we can test His life against that of the Old Testament prophesies to see how He fulfilled them.

The Prophesies of Jesus

While Jesus walked the earth, He also made prophesies that are recorded in many places in the New Testament. Did these prophesies come true?

We know from studying the New Testament that many of the prophesies have already come true:

  • Peter’s denial of Christ
  • Christ’s death and Resurrection
  • The destruction of the Temple

Jesus who was prophesied, now makes prophesies that have been fulfilled. The truth and beauty of Christianity can at times be overwhelming.

Jesus Prophesies About His Second Coming

There are two other very interesting prophesies made by Jesus in New Testament: that of His Second Coming, and that there will be false messiahs before His return. In Lesson 4 we will look at false messiahs, but for now let us study the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

We know that Christ will return to earth a second time. How can we be sure of this? By studying the New Testament, we know that Jesus will only come to Earth once more because Hebrews 9:28 tells us of His Second coming:

28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

So we can know from studying the New Testament that Jesus will appear a second time. How can we know what this will look like? Where will it be? When will it be? In our next lesson we will study how to recognize the Second Coming.
