28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
By studying the New Testament we know what things will happen when Jesus Christ returns the second time. There will be:
- Signs in the heavens
- The dead will come out of the grave
- Christ will appear in the heavens and send out His angels
- All nations will mourn
- The end of the world
Matthew 24:27 tells us that it will be sudden and unmistakable:
27 For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
Signs in the Heavens
Luke 21:25 says there will be many astronomical signs in the heavens and on Earth:
25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.
as does Matthew 24:29:
29 “Immediately after the distress of those days
“‘the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’
The Dead Will Rise
1 Thessalonians 4:6 says the resurrection of the dead will occur:
6 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
as does 1 Corinthians 15:20-23:
20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.
Christ With His Angels Will Appear In Glory
Matthew 24:30-31 tells us that Christ will appear gloriously in the heavens with his angels and there will be trumpet blasts as the angels are sent forth as all peoples of the earth mourn when they see Him:
30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth[a] will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.[b] 31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
So the Second Coming will be very obvious, unmistakable, as the dead rise to life and Christ comes in glory. We know from reading the New Testament that this will be the end of the world. In our next lesson we will look at whether there will be any false messiahs before Christ’s Second Coming.
